Your Questions About Fitness

John asks…

Will elbow joint movement limitations disqualify me from the SEALs?

Im 22 years old and in excellent physical condition. Im at the gym 6 days a week for 2 hours a day. I’m what you may call a natural bodybuilder. Im 6ft 1in tall and weigh about 200lbs at roughly 8% body fat. When I was younger (age 10) I was in an accident and shattered the radial head in my left arm that creates the elbow joint. Growth of the arm is normal but I am slightly limited in the range of motion at which I can bring my palm completely face up. For example I can perform hammer style curls with ease but full on preacher curls are a no go due to the rotation limits. As I mentioned earlier I have no trouble with ANYTHING else and easily perfom every other gym style and fitness lift or exercise. The SEALs have been my dream and I need to know if it is possible to join with this slight problem. Thanks!
Ok so I’m going to update this a bit. I know all about basic and the requirements for it. I’ve been training as a tri-athlete for many years and my cardio and endurance is beyond what wil be needed. BUDS will push me no doubt but basic will go smooth. I have been in contact with a recruiter and ALL the paperwork is complete. Im going down to MEPS on the 7th. The recruiter said the elbow would not be a problem but I know recruiters have a tendancy to lie and say whatever is needed to get me sworn in. I was told to just simply keep my mouth shut down at MEPS and say only what is needed to get through the process. So, I guess my question now is should I just go into BUDS and keep my mouth shut about it and see if I can handle what they throw at me? I just dont want to get kicked out of BUDS if Im in and making progress through it.

The Expert answers:

The key is not to let them know that you have this limitation. If they were to be informed from the get go then they would not let you join. But if you can get through the hard physical training without showing your weakness then you should be fine.

They do perform many physicals through out the training and enlistment cycle.

If the problem is very noticeable then your chances are slim.

I had a friend who’s right pinky finger had a slight problem. Nothing major at all. He never even thought that it was a problem…and they noted it in a physical and boom he was done…that was the marines though.

Well good luck i hope that it works out for you. Just act as though NOTHING is wrong for as long as you can…

But be prepared for the let down of being held back. Its not a very fair system but they want the best of the best, and that unfortunately means in every aspect.
The military;s point of view is…what if we let this young man fight for us. And when it is most critical he can not perform due to this problem?

Participation in government: student participation in local state and federal government.
Economics:world issues and trends are studied.

The Expert answers:

I think it is great that you have a direction for your life. However, high school is the time to be exploring ALL of your options. I thought that I wanted to be a nurse, but then I took a health class and was like NO. Now I am a teacher. I would take criminal justice and/or human psychology…just to see if you even want to become a social worker. I would also suggest you taking an “internship” underneath a social worker (contact your local DHR of CPS). If after these classes and your internship you still want to pursue this path, I would talk with your guidance counselor at your high school, along with the one at your local college, about courses to take and things you can be doing now on your own to prepare.

Nancy asks…

How accurate is the new generation Ipod Nano pedometer?

I got the newest Ipod around when it first came out. I think its the 5th generation Ipod Nano. Anyways, there is a section in “extras” for “fitness” which has a pedometer option. You put in your approximate weight and once you start it, it can count how many steps you take, how many calories you have lost (approx.) and the time it has been since you started the session. It seemed kind of sketchy, since it probably worked by motion sensing when it thought you were taking a step. I just want to see if anyone knows really how accurate the pedometer really is.

The Expert answers:

Err not that accurate.
I used my cousin’s iPod Nano, and I went for a walk.
I counted my steps to see if it would be the same.
I counted 300, and it was off by about 25.
I even put it by my ankle, and went for a short jog to see if that would help.
I jogged about 500 steps, and it was ahead by about 50.
Then I did the same but put it on my waste and jogged the same distance.
Off by A LOT.

Not that accurate.

Thomas asks…

Do I have to put up with stupid Christians if I were to join the American Army?

I’m seriously considering joining the Army next year. I want to see the world, and I only had enough money to go to the UK for the past Summer. Standards are low (the American army allows people without high school diplomas and people who are severely overweight), so I guess that it is probably in my best interests to take advantage of all the money the government spends each year. One of the major problems IS….
I do NOT want to put up with Christians (particularly evangelicals). I do NOT want to be around Bible pushers, praying all the time, or going to “spiritual fitness programs”. I’m tolerant of other religions (Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, etc…), but Christians in particular piss me off (their belief system included). Here is a link where I saw this in motion; it’s disgusting: http://www.talk2action.org/story/2010/8/19/113223/843
So; those with personal experiences, can you tell me if you witnessed this kind of oppression? Thanks!
BQ: Does the military pay for DECENT colleges? Not Community Colleges?
The military HAS lowered its standards. Also, I am considering joining the Navy, to see the world through its ports (Korea, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, etc…)
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2008/01/dumb_and_dumber.html
Some of you sound like the very people I dislike. There’s no way I could possibly be rejected by the military. Also, $4500 is basically nothing. University of Washington, UC Berkeley, Wharton, etc… are much more expensive. Another question; does the military pay for an AMERICAN car? Can I sell it or keep the money? Thanks!
Andrew- Thank you for the respectful response. I was thinking about some non-combat jobs (there are many), or, even a combat job, if that is what is available. This isn’t WW1, Korea, Vietnam, etc… It’s much safer.

The Expert answers:

You’ll be fine. Also if you want to see the world, i suggest you look into the Navy more so than the Army. The Army will most likely end you up in a place that’s not great for sight seeing. Navy travels all around the world.

Mary asks…

What are careers that make good money. I am interested in health, fitness, nutrition and teaching too.?

What can I do? I want a career I enjoy but also that makes good money! Because all I want is money, money and the car, cars and the clothes, the… haha just kidding! I am 19 female and live in chicago! Currently in college finishing my AA

The Expert answers:

Sports medicine is a good job because you do not have to deal with sick people(unless you want to, then i suggest a doctor), but it has a good pay and you can teach about health and nutrition. Its a perfect job for you.

Daniel asks…

How to make a personal fitness plan?

I’m 19 years old and I really would like to get more fit. I’m 5’3″ and currently weigh 102 pounds. I used to dance, but since I’ve stopped I’ve lost a lot of weight (probably muscle) and I’d like to get that back.

I’m currently not working and won’t be leaving for school for another month, so I could workout on a daily basis. I also don’t have money to join a gym or buy a bunch of fancy equipment.

Could anyone help me put something together?

The Expert answers:

It is all about establishing a routine and maintaining the pattern. You need a written plan for meal/recipes for healthy eating and a fitness plan for a consistent workout. Drink plenty of water and rebuild your metabolism with 5-6 small meals a day. For a great guild with organic based supplements look into the Trim Body System Kit. Contains all that I mentioned above and works great. Also has meal replacement bars to aid in lowering your calorie intake. Go to http://Arcameda.com and click on Weight Management for more information. Great tools to get you where you want to go. It helped me establish a pattern to get fit and maintain the fitness.

Michael asks…

What is a healthy workout routine for a 19 year old female?

I’m nineteen and I’m 5ft 3 in and 100 lbs. I’m not overweight, I just want to feel healthier.
I’m just not sure what I should be doing. Right now I’m doing 100 sit up’s every night but I know that’s not all I should be doing. Any advice is great!

-Also I’m new to working out so I’m not good with all the fitness lingo. Thanks again :]

Richard asks…

What are the minimum fitness requirements to join the British Army?

Im 19 and female if that helps 🙂 thanks in advance

The Expert answers:

I cant think of the top of my head but i wouldn’t tell you the minimum anyway, always aim higher try and do a 1.5 mile run in around 12 Min’s, 60 sit ups in 2 Min’s and 30 press ups in 2 Min’s if you can do all of them you have no problems at all, if you find your better keep going, search for the male entrants test and see if you can do them there not that much different do anything to keep yourself motivated and push harder and faster once or twice a week in your training 😉

Maria asks…

Should I buy a xbox 360 console even though I am in my mid 20s, fresh out of college and about to work?

My last home gaming system was a Super Nintendo? I have family who have almost all the current game systems, so I spend time at their home gaming. I want to have a system of my own so I can play games like the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 with them. No disrespect to you gamers out there, but gaming takes a lot of time and money and I am torn between wanting to buy the new Modern Warfare bundle or spending the money to develop my musical abilities or even spending it to hire a fitness trainer. What do you guys think?

The Expert answers:

I am 23 married and have a kid on the way. My wife and I will be buying a 360 shortly. I say that there is no wrong in you wanting to buy one for yourself. As long as you pay all your obligations and take care of other things there should be no problem. As for take to much money if you have a gym membership you could either make a friend with someone that knows what there doing or some gyms also have free trainers that will help you if you ask. The best thing for spending is to put it into your budget somehow.

The Expert answers:

The Nintendo 3DS.

Because you can play music (even with the system close).

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you’re the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today’s American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D “Blue Man Group” video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE “Nintendo Video” App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS’s Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS’s Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it’s all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

Also, the screen is perfectly fine, in terms of resolution. Anyway, it’s the pixel density that matters, not the actual number of pixels. The 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV of, for example, 32 inches. It’s perfectly fine. Not everything has to be 1080p you know. Since 1080p at 32 inches is worse than just 240p on the 3DS.

And they’re making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses.

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 to 2 weeks of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download 3D & 2D Videos on the 3DS.

And the 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content.

And you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser’s 3D ability:

http://3dporch.com/

http://3dspaint.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And the 3DS is getting a Wi-Fi Update this MONTH to RECORD 3D Videos and upload it to YouTube and all of this in the 3DS this Month by hooking your 3DS up to a Wireless Internet Connection like Wi-Fi or your own Home Internet or the Library and so fort during this Month as shown in this Link.

Sport and recreation career assignment

Athletic trainers assess sports injuries, providing appropriate treatment, and educating athletes on injury-prevention programs as well as healthy lifestyles. Trainers help with rehabilitation after an injury.
An athletic trainer works with school sports teams, professional sports, or in sports medicine clinics or health clubs. Trainers work in collaboration with physicians and coaches, insuring that treatment plans are followed and athletes are not returned to the game prematurely. Trainers can work full-time year round or on a seasonal basis which varies with each sport.

Students should study biology, chemistry, and physics as well as basic first-aid. Some coaching or experience as a team captain is preferable. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are available in athletic training. An authorized program includes courses such as human anatomy and physiology, psychology, nutrition, and physical education plus extensive field experience. Athletic trainers also need good social and communication skills because they are constantly working with people.

Athletic Trainer salaries vary depending on the location and the setting. The average salary is $18.44 per hour, which totals up to about $38,360 per year, comparing to a personal trainer, fitness trainer or aerobic instructor they make a good amount of money. Of coarse though, like every job the salary usually starts smaller and when the amount of hours and experience is increased so does the salary range.

Along with this job there are many advantages and disadvantages. Being a personal trainer has its benefits, like you get a free membership to any gym you work at, and meet great people. Teaching a class is also a good workout for yourself. Some cons are it is extremely tiring, physically demanding and is lots of competition out there. You have lots of laundry all the time (being sweaty does that).

There are a number of ways for athletic trainers to advance or move into related positions. Some assistant athletic trainers could become head athletic trainers and, eventually become athletic directors. Some athletic trainers may even move into sales and marketing positions, in this field they are able to use their athletic trainer expertise to sell medical and athletic equipment.

The appropriateness of this field for myself is not a type of field I would be looking into for when considering what to do with my life. Being an athletic trainer would be a lot of work and would mean I would need to be extremely well fit. I am fit but teaching other people how to be fit and helping them out, is something that I simply not interested in pursuing. I would also need a lot of schooling because you need to know about muscles and first aid.

thanks

Donald asks…

Daniel asks…

What are careers that make good money. I am interested in health, fitness, nutrition and teaching too.?

What can I do? I want a career I enjoy but also that makes good money! Because all I want is money, money and the car, cars and the clothes, the… haha just kidding! I am 19 female and live in chicago! Currently in college finishing my AA

The Expert answers:

Sports medicine is a good job because you do not have to deal with sick people(unless you want to, then i suggest a doctor), but it has a good pay and you can teach about health and nutrition. Its a perfect job for you.

Sharon asks…

James asks…

What is a healthy workout routine for a 19 year old female?

I’m just not sure what I should be doing. Right now I’m doing 100 sit up’s every night but I know that’s not all I should be doing. Any advice is great!

I would also need a lot of schooling because you need to know about muscles and first aid.

thanks

Your Questions About Fitness

George asks…

Lisa asks…

John asks…

What are the best xbox 360 games?

I don’t want any of these boyish games for fighting (like call of duty, star wars, gears of war, La noire, etc..) . I just bought my xbox recently and these are the games i have:-
-PES 11
-Virtua Tennis 4
-Halo
-Zumba Fitness
-Kinect Adventures
-Some bowling game (4got the name)

Laura asks…

Betty asks…

Your Questions About Fitness

Thomas asks…

What are careers that make good money. I am interested in health, fitness, nutrition and teaching too.?

What can I do? I want a career I enjoy but also that makes good money! Because all I want is money, money and the car, cars and the clothes, the… haha just kidding! I am 19 female and live in chicago! Currently in college finishing my AA

The Expert answers:

Sports medicine is a good job because you do not have to deal with sick people(unless you want to, then i suggest a doctor), but it has a good pay and you can teach about health and nutrition. Its a perfect job for you.

Lizzie asks…

Joseph asks…

What is a healthy workout routine for a 19 year old female?

I’m nineteen and I’m 5ft 3 in and 100 lbs. I’m not overweight, I just want to feel healthier.
I’m just not sure what I should be doing. Right now I’m doing 100 sit up’s every night but I know that’s not all I should be doing. Any advice is great!

Does XSport Fitness provide free tanning at the Chicago Lakeview location?

Carol asks…
