Sandy asks…

Do spices such as black pepper or oregano have enough calories to count?

I thought they had 0 but according to my fitness pal 1 teaspoon of oregano has 3 calories and is that really that toxic to my diet that if I don’t count that am I not going to lose weight? Do those of you who count calories do you really measure and track herbs & spices such as these? Should I be? I know every little bit adds up but this is making me not want to diet. Any diet and weight loss tips?

The Expert answers:

Diets and different forms of exercise are two of my favorite subjects..
I did a calorie counting diet one time because it was the best diet to go with bodybuilding so that i could lose fat without losing much muscle. You just have to get close on the calorie counting because whatever you read on a label about calories or whatever a food weighs in relationship to its calorie content is just a close estimate. It’s not going to be the true calorie content anyway.
The best way to do a calorie counting diet is to have a daily calorie range which you determine based on your present needs and how many to cut out to lose weight. Usually a 200 to 300calorie range where some days you eat low and other high within that range. Example would be 1200 to 1500 calories a day. So making close calorie estimates will be good enough.
Diet advice. Pick a diet that appeals to you and study how to do it correctly.
I could even do a fast food diet and lose weight because i have the information on how to do it based on the success of other people who have done it.
Learn to love water or other drinks without calories would be a good weight loss tip.

Steven asks…

Do three sausage links mean three sausages or four?

I’m trying to complete my fitness pal details with a sausage sandwich with tomato sauce which had three sausages in, but I can only find the option to have two ‘links’, so you can enter 1.5 servings for three sausages. But then I thought, does links refering to the sausages or the links between the sausages – at which point if refering to the links between them, three links would mean four sausages. So how do I enter three sausages eaten – two or three links?

The Expert answers:

It’s three links.

You don’t refer to the links between the sausage, just the part you ate since that’s the calories/nutrients you actually consumed. Why count more calories for the part you didn’t eat? 🙂

Michael asks…

Is it possible for me to get this stomach?

http://www.fitness.com/articles/165/the_ultimate_secrets_to_a_flat_stomach_and_six_pack_abs.php
I am starting hip hop or jazz and ballet 4 times a week.I am on the treadmill for 30 minutes everyday ,I do a LOT of lunges and squats everyday,I do jump 300 times with a jump rope everyday, and I am on the exercise ball doing 5 different types of stomach exercises 50-100 times.

The Expert answers:

Firts I would like to compliment you and your work out routine. Working out would definitely help you get that stomach, if you eat healthier, it will help you burn of that extra little fat thats just stubborn. Drinks lots of work, start upping you intake on proteins,(shake, bars, food). And just keep at it..in time you’ll get it.

Lisa asks…

anyone had any luck in slimming/toning their inner thighs or legs in general?

it’s a hard area to work i’ve heard from many fitness magazines/articles and my thighs are my main concern for losing weight in.
does anyone know any leg and thigh exercises that help, especially with the inner thighs?

The Expert answers:

If you want to slim them, it’s all about your diet. Make sure your carb intake is low, and you’re eating a good amount of calories a day.

If you want to TONE them, I suggest walking, running, doing inner leg lifts, squats, jumping jacks, or anything that really focuses on your legs

John asks…

I think that light weights can build muscle just like heavy weights?

read this article and tell me what you think:
http://www.webmd.com/fitnessexercise/news/20100813/want-to-build-muscle-light-weights-will-do

I know that heavy weights buid muscle faster but wont light weights also build muscle? if you do it in really high reps? itll prollly do it much slower, but thats it

The Expert answers:

It will help, but only for a period of time. Sooner or later your muscle will get used to that heaviness and will hit a plateau.

Nancy asks…

Does it really take 40 minutes of exercise to start burning fat?

Okay, so, I’m getting really depressed because everywhere I look; health magazines, internet articles, THE HEALTH & FITNESS CHANNEL, people ALWAYS say that it takes at least 40 minutes of exercise for your body to start burning fat. Something about your body using the calories and carbs in your body as fuel first?

Now, that sounds great and all, but what I REALLY wanna burn is FAT. I honestly could care less about the numbers; my weight is just like, ten lbs higher than what I’d want it to be which is really not so bad. What I WANT to see melt off however, is the BLUBBER around my waist and thighs! Inches are more important to me than numbers. I want to lose at LEAST 2-3 inches before school starts, just in time for back-to-school shopping, so I’ve got about 2 weeks. I’ve head that’s possible? Yes? Good? Okay? That’s great. Don’t try to tell me otherwise. I’m determined.

ANYWAY. I’m getting off topic. So my question is, to clarify; does it REALLY take 40 minutes? I just did 10 minutes of intense cardio and I can already feel the burn. I’m not a very fit person; I feel like Hercules with the weight of the world on my shoulders when my Phys Ed teacher makes me run the mile, but that’s only the effects of 15 years of bad eating habits and non-exercise. My parents BOTH have VERY small frames and high metabolism, and I believe I’ve inherited that AMAZINGNESS since I used to do this dumb thing where I’d go out for McDonalds 3 nights in a row every week and only gain like 2 pounds, so do you think I’ll still have to work THAT hard to lose a few inches? If I start off with baby steps; 20 minutes of running/speed walking everyday and eating less than 1500 calories, and gradually increase to 30 minutes of cardio with 10 at night before bed, eating the same amount of calories, do you think I will see results?

Only reason I’m asking is cause it’s really hard to measure the rate of weight loss since everybody is so different, so I’m wondering if some people are an exception to this 40 minute rule. I’ve heard miracle stories about people who only jogged for 15 minutes a day and lost like, 5 inches in a month, and then some tragedies about those who exercised for an hour a day and lost non.

Please share some wisdom! 😛 10 points?? ^___^ WOW I feel so enthusiastic! This is normally not like me!!

BTW:

I recently turned 15, I’m 5’3, and currently 130~135 pounds. (I fluctuate between the numbers..)

The Expert answers:

Usually, when you sleep your body burns about 60 calories, when you are awake, the amount burned goes to about 80 calories. Just for doing nothing, just because the body needs heat, to keep the temperature at 37 degrees celsius. When you walk, for example, you burn 120-150 calories, that means that your muscles are burning only 40-70 calories, the rest are for sitting down.
If the exercise you do is more complex, more calories you lose. The most intense activity should burn the most number of calories. But an intense exercise means that you can’t do it all the time, so the breaks doesn’t count. Let’s take sprints example, it is very very intense but how long you can sprint ? 10 seconds, and then 2 minutes break ?
People researched this and found out that the best calorie burning exercise should use many muscles in the same time and to be at an intensity level that can be sustained for about 30-60 min. Few decades ago they invented the aerobic training: while the legs are used to jump the hands are shaking in the air. To prevent getting tired, the exercise is changed every few minutes, so other muscles will take the action.
They also reveled that the best environment to burn weight is when the heart beat is between 100 and 140 beats per minute, this is exactly where the aerobic training stands. For sprint, it should go over 180 and sometimes reach over 200.
The running is an alternative to aerobic, the pulse is all right, you can keep it for hours, but when running the same muscles are used all the time which can be a pain sometimes.
Drink a lot of water and keep yourself motivated

George asks…

What Components of fitness does soccer have (from the list below)?

Agility: Agility is the talent to perform a sequence of tense power movements in rapid progression in opposing directions (e.g. Zig-Zag running or cutting movements).

Balance: Balance is the ability to control the body’s position, either stationary (e.g. a handstand) or while moving (e.g. a gymnastics stunt).

Cardiovascular Endurance: The heart’s ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it (e.g. running long distances).

Co-ordination: The ability to integrate the above listed components so that effective movements are achieved.

Flexibility: Flexibility the ability to achieve an extended range of motion without being impeded by excess tissue, i.e. fat or muscle (e.g. executing a leg split).

Local Muscle Endurance: A single muscle’s ability to perform sustained work (e.g. rowing or cycling).

Power: Power is the skill to apply maximum muscular contraction immediately in an instant burst of actions (e.g. a number of hard immediate punches). The two components of power are strength and speed.

Strength Endurance: A muscle’s ability to perform a maximum contraction time after time (e.g. continuous explosive rebounding through an entire basketball game).

Strength: Strength is the degree to which muscles can apply force by contracting against resistance (e.g. lifting a TV).

The Expert answers:

It involves all of them…but the main ones are probably Agility and Cardiovascular Endurance.

Your Questions About Fitness

David asks…

Is it true that eating extra calories 1 out of 7 days will boost yourmetabolism??

I was looking up different exercise programs and came across harley pasternaks 5-factor fitness program. It said that if you exercised and ate healthyfully all week, you could double your calorie intake one day and not exercise because it’s proven to give you a metabolic boost.

I can see the logic in this, and I’m sure it helps people stay on their diets longer because they won’t feel deprived. But is this whole “metabolic boost” thing fact or fiction?

The Expert answers:

Actually, it is. Because you’re eating less than you’re used to, your body gets confused – It may think it’s starving. So by eating a bit more on the 7th day, you’re letting your body know that it ISN’T starving – It just has to get healthy. I’m not so sure about eating as much as DOUBLE, but a bit more, maybe 500-800 calories etc will help.

Robert asks…

A fitness plan or exercise suggestions?

I am a little out of shape emerging out of my hibernation-ish winter. I have a small medical problem that won’t interfere with exercising except for the fact that i’m not supposed to lose weight because of it. what are some things i can do to improve my fitness? and if i exercise obviously every day or whatever people will freak out… but i eat healthy when i can, and this summer i want to get more athletic. any ideas? 🙂
lance thats exactly what im trying not to do. does that drink give toned muscle? i didnt think so.

The Expert answers:

With knowing the nature of your problem it is difficullt to advise a program. Do you like dancing. If so then start a rountine by doing some active dancing[ disco] or such like. This elevates your heart rate without over stressing your body. The idea of elevating the heart rate is to start the calorie burning process.Once you’ve complete your warm up set then try some sit ups and push ups;{ if you need to start push ups from your knees and develop into the full push up over several days/weeks. After the sit ups and push ups do some jogging on the spot to elevate your heart rate again. Then try some aerobics light intensity at first and build up to a greater intensity. As your exercise programs proceeds reduce slightly what you eat. Not by much just a little. Don’t expect miricle results in days as programs as these are designed to work over time and continued effort. You will gradually notice you can do more sit ups and push ups and work out longer as your body becomes fitter and fitter. Please be patient and results will come your way . The most critical thing is to start. Good luck.

Sandy asks…

Please check my composition in English about fitness centre updaed Thank you everybody for your help?

30 May (Abu Dhabi)
Task 1: Write a letter to the sports center manager complaining about some problems you face when you go to his sports center.

Dear Mr. Black,

I have been a regular customer of your centre for several years. I would like to thank you for your service and have to admit that THE personnel of your centre are attentive and obliging. All the sports machines HAVE BEEN in perfect condition lately.

Unfortunately, there have been some shortfalls in the service of your centre connected with exercise machine at THE present moment. First of all, I want to draw your attention tj the fact that three exercise bikes have been out of order since September.

According to the announcement on the boarding , the customers were clearly promised to enjoy riding on exercise bikes on the fifth of September. Four weeks have passed so far but no exercise bikes have appeared instead of old ones. Secondly, the coach trained me quited?) the job and I was told that I would have a new one during my next visit and still I am working out on my own.

I would like all these problems to be solved as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Bred Pitt

The Expert answers:

Hi,

You have a typo in the 2nd paragraph, it should be to, not tj.

In the 2nd paragraph, it should be ‘connected with THE exercise MACHINES….’

Also, I would say problems, not shortfalls. It makes more sense this way.

The first sentence of the 4th paragraph doesn’t make sense: ‘According to the announcement on the boarding.’ No idea what that means.

Also it is not very good English when you say ‘no excercise bikes have appeared instead of old ones’. You could say ‘The excercise bikes have not been replaced.’

It should also be, ‘the coach that trained me QUIT his job.’

You may want to put a full stop after ‘next visit’ and start the new sentence ‘I am still…’

If the name is supposed to be the actor, Brad Pitt, it is BRAD, not Bred.

Apart from that its fine! I hope this helps. 🙂

Helen asks…

Cycling different muscle groups than running?

i have been running and other types of exercise for years now bht only started cycling to college. maybe its to the fact i do sport & fitness and cycle back . so 10mile there and back. back of my quads ache like hell and wonder if its just its alot exercise or its different muscle groups?

The Expert answers:

You are using the same muscles but in a different motion or action.
What happens is your muscles become specific sport conditioned, so when you do something different they are fatigued easily.
It is thought that 4 miles on a bike is equal to 1 mile running but if you are used to running 10 miles and are not a biker you can not possibly bike 40 miles, it doesn’t work that way.
Biking 10 miles without training is going to be very difficult on your legs, and probably your rear end.
If you want to bike just ease into it like you did running.

Maria asks…

Exercise / Diet plan, please help? :)?

Some of you may want to know why i don’t do all this myself BUT I honestly don’t have a clue as to what i should be doing or eating E.g the amount of protein etc…

Ok, so here’s the deal… i don’t like long texts so i’ll give you the facts 😉

I have the whole summer holiday to basically get as fit as possible. I am more than happy to do at least a session every day. I already have a good diet but my dad’s away for two weeks and would hugely appreciate a good meal plan for a two week period… any food, i eat anything and am good at cooking.

personally:

Age – 18
Height – 6ft 3″ (192cm)
Weight – 13st 4lbs (86.5kg)
Body fat – i think around 18% (not sure…)

Goals:

Weight – 12st 4lbs (78kg)
Body fat – around 10%
— To lose my lower stomach fat.
— To mainly increase upper body strength and core whilst maintaining leg strength and have very good cardio fitness for both rowing and rugby.

The more strenuous the better… 😉 i will follow it but would really appreciate some pointers please

Ken asks…

Let me tell you a story?

This is a tale explaining the manner in which my way of life was rotated along a Y axis until it reached a position roughly 180 degrees from that which it started. If I could have 60 seconds of your time, simply place your posterior in the selected location, and I will relate to you the details of how I was made the male monarch of the district of the City of Los Angeles, California located at coordinates 34.08333 -118.44778.

In the western region of the “City of Brotherly Love” known as Philadelphia, my mother expelled me from her womb and indeed that is also where I spent my childhood, in my mother’s care. The majority of my time was spent in a recreational area containing such diversions as a jungle gym, swing set, sand box, etc. I was typically at the height of leisure while frequently at a temperature slightly below what might be considered standard room temperature. Outside of my educational institution I was engaging in a game of basketball with some of my friends, when a couple of gentlemen who seemed to be of the disposition to cause a great deal of mischief began causing a great deal of chaos and disharmony in the area in which I lived. I was involved in one rather small bout of fisticuffs after which my mother became concerned for my general safety and well-being, and she informed me that I would be moving in with her sister and her sister’s husband in the previously mentioned community located at the previously mentioned location.

I implored my mother to relent approximately 24-48 hours ago, yet she gathered my belongings in a somewhat flat, rectangular shaped piece of luggage and expelled me from her presence. She placed her lips upon my cheek in an affectionate manner and handed me a pre-purchased pass for public transportation. I placed the headphones for my personal music system into my ears and verbalized the idea that I may as well impact this situation with my foot. Traveling in the highest available level of comfort, this is indeed an unfortunate situation (although I make this statement with some irony). Consuming the juices obtained by the squeezing of the fruit of a Citrus sinensis from a piece of glass stemware commonly reserved for the sipping of sparkling wine originating from the Champagne region of France, I pause to wonder if this is indeed how the residents of the admittedly upper-class neighborhood located at the previously mentioned location commonly live. Indeed, I find this situation may be rather to my enjoyment.

I puckered my lips and exhaled forcefully to produce a shrill note in order to gain the attention of a taxicab driver, and as the driver approached I observed his California vanity plate which, in place of the traditional jumble of alpha-numeric characters, used only the letters F, R, E, S, and H, spelling out the word “fresh”. Additionally, from his rearview mirror dangled a pair of oversized, fur-covered cubes decorated to look like the six-sided dice commonly used in gambling and board games. In such a situation I could have made a statement about the unusualness of this particular taxicab to the point of it being nearly unique. Instead I cogitatively decided against it and instead informed the driver that he should deliver me to what was to become my new home in the community located at the previously mentioned location.

We pulled up to a large domicile sometime between the hours of 7 and 8 o’clock, and in a loud tone of voice I informed the cab driver that at some undetermined point in the future I would again detect his odor through my sense of olfaction. I gazed about the region of land that I was destined to rule, reflecting on my arrival: Here I would claim my rightful place upon the throne, from which I would govern the previously mentioned community of Bel-Air as monarch.

Helen asks…

Fitness and/or diet experts needed! What is the best exercise and nutrition program?

What is the best workout / diet program for me?

My background: 25 year old male, 6’2″, 180 lbs, basically fit and trim. I’ve been doing Matt Furey’s combat conditioning, eating less than 2000 cals/day and doing about 30 pull ups daily. I look and feel fit, but I have kind of a wiry look.

My objectives:
1. exercise no more than 30-60 mins a day.
2. eat well, but on a budget(!) approx. $10/day
3. gain strength, size to arms / torso
4. put on a little muscle weight/size without having to consume too many calories
5. avoid using free weights / machines, if possible, as I don’t have them

I’m not a crazy anorexic or anything, but I believe that consuming as few calories as possible will lead to a longer life.

So I really want a lifestyle that is healthy and sustainable. IE: I don’t want consider the consumption of 5000 calories worth of expensive placebo supplements sustainable.

What is the best workout and diet program for me? Thanks a million!

The Expert answers:

Well first off calories are actually defined as energy. Empty calories are what you need to be concerned with. (Beer/alcohol, processed foods, sugars etc.)

Eating too few calories per day can also be bad for you. Especailly if you are active. I suggest you figure out your daily caloric needs before starving yourself.

Eating too little can lead to lethargia, muscle atrophy, poor energy levels, depression/mood swings, just for starters.

If your strength training for 30-60 minutes per day it is very important you consume your daily caloric needs as well as sufficient protein/carbs/fats. Otherwise your just waisting your time in the gym.

I consume 6-8 meals per day, consisting of 3-4 protein shakes which are cheap and full of vitamins and low calories. I suggest Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey as it is low calorie/fat plus it’s cheap and tastes great.

I weigh about 170 and am currently around 8% body fat. My caloric needs are between 2400-2800 in order for me to maintain/bulk without adding body fat. My protien consumption is around 250-300g MAX per day.

Visit www.bodybuilding.com or www.forum.bodybuilding.com and search for daily caloric needs, etc. Play around in the forums also you’ll learn a lot of beneficial knowledge. Here you will also find great deals on supplements as well as free info on training.

As far as training, look into the Body for Life program for starts. It will give you a great foundation

Michael asks…

How to do exercises in Men’s Fitness Magazine?

I just subscribed to Men’s Fitness and recently started working out. My question is how do you perform the exercises properly? I mean, in the fitness section of the magazine, there are usually three workouts (A, B, C). Do I do exercise A first, then rest a day, then B, then rest a day, and so on?? Also, some workouts require me to do exercises in between sets. Does this mean I do exercise A, exercise B, and then A, and B again until I’m done???

Please help me. I know that I over analyze things a lot, but I wan’t to learn how to be healthy.
Thanks.
Also, in Men’s Fitness, it seems like theres two different sections for workouts. Am I supposed to do the first section one day and the next section the next day? Or just choose a goal, and do the required exercises??

The exercises are pull ups, push ups, sit ups, basketball throw, shuttle run, and mile run.

If anyone has workout that strengthens these muscle groups and is willing to post them that would be awesome.

The Expert answers:

Well, when I workout with the Marines they make us do these things. (I dunno if it’ll help):

Sun gods(Rotating your arms in small short circles away from your body, and above your body both clock wise for 15 times and counter clockwise for 15 times. Military style)
Push ups until you hit muscle failure
Crunches
Sprinting

Thats about all I can remember.

Your Questions About Fitness

Joseph asks…

Doctors, medically qualified folk, your help please?

I’m looking for a serious, considered answer, ideally from medical doctors, or other suitably qualified medical professionals, such as perhaps neuroscientists or physiotherapists.
I realize this may be an unusual and even difficult question, but please bear with me, as I am in a very troubled state.
WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS THIS: CAN I CONDITION MY BODY (& EVEN MY MIND) TO BETTER WITHSTAND BLOWS TO THE HEAD?
Last week I was assaulted, but fortunately managed to escape without being hurt. But it immediately reminded me of a powerful, long-standing fear of mine, one which – along with the OCD which made me leave in the 1st place – has stopped me returning to martial arts training:
I am terrified of blows to the head.
Since beginning martial arts aged 15 (I’m 40 now), I have come across MANY stories of people who have been killed by blows to the head: boxer Barry McGuigan accidentally killed an opponent, a 23 yr. old kickboxer who entered his 1st competition was killed the 1st headpunch, a schoolboy killed by another after 2 headpunches, and the man killed by 1 headpunch from Karate champ Alfie Lewis, who was defending himself from 4 vandals attacking his car while he was in it. So my fear is not entirely groundless.
I AM AWARE however, that there are people in the martial arts world, who believe that it is possible to REDUCE the effect of blows to the head, BY STRENGTHENING THE MUSCLES OF THE NECK, e.g. Larry Hartsell (JKD). American Karateka Joe Lewis believes you can train to overcome a glass jaw, but I don’t know how. The idea is that stronger neck muscles will carry the force of the blow down into the body, away from the brain, much like a lightning conductor does with lightning. I guess also that strong necks stop the head from being jolted so violently by the blow, reducing its concussive effects on the brain. And in New Scientist’s “Last Word”, 1 scientist who answered “What happens when I am knocked out?” said that if your jaw is open when you are struck on it, it will carry the forces round to the base of the brain, knocking you out; whereas if your jaw were closed, the forces are more likely to dissipate through the skull, reducing your chances of being knocked out.
I myself also imagine that a high level of aerobic fitness would better supply my brain with oxygen, making me more likely to better recover from a blow to the head, if not better withstand it in the 1st place.
LET’S BE CLEAR – I’M NOT expecting a magic solution here; I DON’T believe I can ever become impervious to all impacts to the head. BUT I DO KNOW that some people (Muhammed Ali ?) seem better able to withstand blows to the head than others, or at least they seem harder to knock out, although I know that ALL blows to the head WILL cause damage to brain, however small, so that over time they can still have a cumulative effect which may be catastrophic. NOR DO I INTEND to run around exposing my head to all sorts of dangers even if there is a solution to this.
So is there anything I can do by way of training and conditioning which may offer better protection to my brain? I mentioned the neck-strengthening theory to my doctor today, and he said it’s nonsense. What have you to say on this?
Like I said, I’m not about to strengthen my neck then get into fights or do motorbike stunts, but at least I maybe won’t have to worry so much about being mugged, or speaking up for myself (a BIG problem for me) in case the other person loses it and kills me. I’ve let fear cripple me for 40 years, and I hate it.
Eleanor, I live in Scotland in the UK. Where would I look for such a gum-shield? Can you recommend any brand names?
So far these are ALL GREAT answers (apart from that “Yep” person; why?), better even than in the medical section, where I expected good things, so well done all!
JUST TO CLARIFY A POINT, it IS and has ALWAYS BEEN, my utmost desire to AVOID blows to the head!
I would say that this, more than any other specific technical goal, is the most important thing for me in martial arts training.
If I had my way, I’d be impossible to hit anywhere on the body; and I’ll always try to get as close to that as I can. But as I’m not that good yet, I’m simply trying to cover all my bases, which I think you would appreciate is a SERIOUS concern for me when you consider that I was assaulted last week.
So thanks again to all who have written so far.

The Expert answers:

So it’s not a ‘blow to the head’ you’re that concerned about as a concussion or skull fracture.

A concussion is a bruise on the brain. It occurs when the brain smacks against the inside of the skull. The more violently the head whips around as the result of a shock (punch) the greater the chance of damage to the brain. Strengthening the neck helps to absorb this shock and reduce the motion of the head, which in turn reduced the odds of getting a concussion.

Skull fractures are another matter entirely. In the cases you listed above, some of the damage could have come from the head of the victim impacting the ground, a more likely cause of skull fractures than a simple punch. It’s very hard to fracture the cranium with the bare fist, and by “very hard” I mean nearly impossible. There isn’t much one can do to reduce the odds of striking the skull on a hard surface (concrete, light pole, table corner, etc) while one is unconscious; however, learning how to break ones fall by training a system like Judo can help a conscious person fall in such a way that they protect their head from hitting the ground. Unsurprisingly, strong neck muscles also help in this instance as well.

Ironically, the best training for the reduction of impacts to the skull are in systems where head injuries are likely, like Judo and boxing. A good boxing stance, in which the chin is tucked, the shoulders are raised, and the hands are up, forms a protective shell designed to protect the chin, face, and temples. Of course, you’d have to face your fear of getting punched in the head in order to train in boxing.

Incidentally, the brain is capable of growing back brain cells. Blows to the head need not be catastrophic; in fact, permanent neurological damage is only present in boxers or fighters who’ve spent years taking hard shots to the head. Moderate to light sparring with adequate protective gear can build good reflexes without risking severe brain damage.

Sandy asks…

Is Global Warming science or cult?

Definition of Cult
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cult

–noun
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
7. the members of such a religion or sect.
8. any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

—————————————————————————-
Observations
1. They refer to each other as believers. e.g. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/226175_climate29.html
2. It is so venerated that if you don’t think there is enough proof you are called a “denier.”
3. One of it’s leaders was so devoted, he used his tax-payer paid position to make a stand for criminal behavior.
4. They are so bound together that if you were once a part of their group and now you have changed your mind they find some way of claiming your not a scientist or your motives are false, i.e. paid by oil.
5. Can’t think of any examples of this one.
6. (NOTE: It is not known if this is true or false yet.)They have several charismatic leaders, who refuse to let other opinions be heard, e.g. Al Gore, James Hansen.
7. Once again if your not in the group you are a “non-believer” or “denier.”
8. This definition does not seem to apply.

Almost never will they deal directly with the questions of a questioner. They always try to demonize the questioner, e.g. “They are paid by oil.”
mtdriver:
You just emphasized my point. Thanks.
Dawei:
You say that the most extreme people don’t affect the science??Might I ask you how many times James Hansen has erred in the favor of cooling? Wouldn’t one expect a normal distribution of errors both in favor of and against if his methods are truely scientific?

He is even so extreme that he asked US citizens to commit civil disobedience. Sounds more like a cult leader than a scientist to me.
Dawei:
Here is a prime example of how believers try to discredit, rather than deal with the issues. http://priceofoil.org/2009/03/10/its-serious-science-versus-the-sceptics/
the link above is classic believer propaganda. First claim that all your opponents are corporate or funded by oil. Then claim the arguments are discredited and outdated.

The problem is that nobody has ever discredited the arguments. You have to deal with the questions, not ad hominem the asker. Then claim victory (by ignorance in most cases).

Which?leads back to the cult like aspect of AGW believers. Cult leaders don’t want you to look to your family or freinds for advice, so they tell you these people are evil and try to keep you away from them. AGW believers don’t want you to take an objective view to Global Warming, so they “discredit” the message bearer and try to avoid the issues.
James:
“(let me get this straight, if we try and stop global warming we are participating in a “cult” with rites and rituals, if we do nothing then we’re hypocrites…..nice double standard haters.)”

Wrong on all counts. If you think that Global Warming is a threat and you want to do something about it. Good for you. I’m not trying to muzzle you.

On the other hand it is painfully obvious that this is not true of the true believers. Anybody who does not believe the mantra is labeled and cast aside as an unworthy cook. The validity of the skeptics argument is seldom considered. Case in point Dr. Richard Lindzen has been marginalized by those with an agenda.
Bucket22:
Qualified by whose standards? You only follow the “qualified” officials that agree with your point of view, whether they have have shown themselves to be frauds or not. You are narrow minded and demonstrating most of the characteristics of a cult member according as defined by dictionary.com.

Cult members also have a hard time seeing how their leaders have brainwashed them into not thinking for themselves. In other words cult members are lemmings.
Dawei:

It does not matter what the institute is, if they have a valid argument you must DEAL WITH the argument. Ad hominem attacks can never discredit a well formed argument.

So would you discredit only the research funded by the oil companies that goes against AGW or would you also discredit their research into alternative fuels?
http://www.bp.com/subsection.do?categoryId=6922&contentId=7042339

If those who are being paid by the oil companies are biased because they are being paid by oil companies then that alternative energy research must be up to no good. Wouldn’t you say?
Mntdiver:
One more thing, I am not making fun of anybody. I am simply pointing out disturbing behavior that has risen in the masses.

Science is very import and it needs to be done right. A scientist should be spending his/her time in the lab trying to make sure we get it right. Not flying half way across the world to use his tax-payer paid position of authority to stand up for individuals committing criminal acts.
Dawei:
You have completely missed the point. This discussion has nothing to do with whether Global Warming is right or wrong. It has to do with the attitude of those that believe it is true.

The Expert answers:

Infidel! Denier! Stone him!

It’s a cult… Or at least part cult. It has most of the traits.

Paul asks…

Why do people think JW’s are a cult?

I’ve always thought it both funny and a little pathetic how people think Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult. Doesn’t anyone read the dictionary anymore or is that too outdated as well as the Bible? (excuses, excuses). My beef is that so many people think that they are a cult when, by definition, they are not. In case no one has read the definition, here it is, STRAIGHT out of the dictionary.

1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
7. the members of such a religion or sect.
8. any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

Wow, that’s weird. None of those definitions fit the description, yet people still call JW’s a cult.

So, my question is, even despite the above explanation, why do people still believe JW’s are a cult? And you’re free to spout off attention-seeking responses, but just keep in mind that they will be ignored.
Blue Foots said: “They are.”

o_O wow, that was very enlightening. Now people will truly believe! -.-
Ahh, I guess ignorance really is bliss to some people.

The Expert answers:

Ya’know, one of the definitions of a cult is following a charismatic person with unorthodox teachings. In that context, since we follow Jesus as our King and he taught the Truth, I’ll accept that label…

We are the ONLY footstep followers of Jesus and the ONLY religion that has the truth as found in the Bible. If the world hates us, so be it….I dont care what label satans followers hang on me. Let Jehovah deal with them, I’ve got other things to do. …Matt 24:14 comes to mind…

Charles asks…

Im on a Weight Gain workout and Mean plan, Will my face make any changes with it?

im on a weight gain meal plan and workout. I lift 4 days a week using compound exercises (bench press, deadlifts, squats, shoulder press ect..) and i eat 6 meals a day including protein shakes and i also take creatine and some NO. i drink lots of water and eat plenty of good fats from salmon and i also take a couple spoon fulls of olive oil once a day to add on to the fats i need. my diet and workouts are good in my opinion ( if you have any different opinions on this feel free to post), but i eat alot as i need to so i can gain the weight i need. im skinny with a chubby baby face, its wierd im 21 and my face looks like im 18. heres my question. Will my face get more chubby with me eating all this food and lifting weights, or could it get a little more in shape with me eating the right foods and working out. I dont eat alot of sugar nor do i eat alot of bad fats, just the good ones. i do not do any cardio to burn fat since im trying to gain weight as fast as possible.

the reason i came up with this question is because when i go to the gym i notice that the people that i constantly see at the gym have a good facial structure, no fat and you can clearly see their jawbone, and they also do cardio. but cardio for me is out of the question so is it possible that the fat on my face will remove if i eat the right foods and drink alot of water? i not only want a good and bigger body but i would also like my face to show for it as well.

I kno this question is out of the ordinary but just something i had in mind and wondering if any body on this site has good knowledge on this subject in fitness and nutrition. Thank you and Semper Fi

The Expert answers:

One thing you need to know, and you may already, is that it is not strictly possible to gain muscle to your full potential without putting on a little fat. You need to take in an excess of calories, more than you need, in order to ensure your body has sufficient energy and nutrients to grow and recover properly, and as a result you will probably put on a little fat. However, many people do lean up whilst weight training, but they may not be eating enough to truly bulk as it seems you want to.

If you are genetically predisposed to store fat on your face, in the short term you may put on a little more there. The trick is to put on an amount of muscle you are happy with, then lose the fat by cutting, reducing your food intake and upping exercise. This should be entirely achievable.

As an alternative to cardio, you can do intense circuit training on your non designated weights days, again with compound exercises but with low weight, by doing a circuit of the exercises.

Hope this helps,
J

Lizzie asks…

What job can people recommend to me?

I want a decent paying job (above average).
I just graduated high school and have no idea what I want to do with my life! I have thought about being a personal trainer, but all the personal trainers I know are getting out of the profession due to the lack of pay right now. Another option I was thinking about as suggested to me by my mom was becoming a massage therapist, although I haven’t researched it very much. So, I ask everyone…What job would be good for me? Here is a little bit of info on myself:

-I like to be active, i have worked on my body for the last 4 or 5 years in the gym and am very dedicated to my own personal fitness, and have looots of knowledge on the subject, although no formal schooling for it

-I like to be around people

-I am fairly good with computers, considering I spent almost all of my time on them up until a few years ago, I have learned the basics of programming in school, although i’m not very good at it

-I know it sounds quite greedy but I don’t think I could settle for a job with below average or average pay, even if i loved it

-I dislike the thought of sitting behind a desk all day, although if the pay is right I wouldn’t mind so much 🙂

-bad at Math and Science, good at any other subject

Answers much appreciated people ! Thanks for reading 🙂

The Expert answers:

Just a note, doesn’t matter what it pays as long as you enjoy it. I’ve had higher paying jobs than what i have now, but i love my job and that means a lot more than the $. As for jobs for you, have you thought about a residential aide in the mhmr field?

Your Questions About Fitness

Laura asks…

Can you help me think of a witty name for my fitness website?

I’m going to be starting a fitness website… It will have my before and after pictures so people will be able to trust the workouts, and the workouts that I used to get a 300 PFT. It will be aimed at people who want to improve their pull/chin-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, crunches, and run times; Mainly body weight workouts. I plan on showing only body weight exercise and trying to stay away from workouts that need equipment. Something witty that doesn’t describe me, but what I do or what the websites about. Maybe you can use some of this to help?
All my friends call me Slim.
I’m a U.S. Marine.
I’m obsessed with getting a perfect physical fitness score.
I was born in Kansas.
I want to help other people improve their strength to body weight ratio.

I feel like the webmaster (ME) being a Marine will be the main “draw” or (for lack of a better word, everything will be free) “selling point”of the website.
The only name I could think of was GetFitWithAMarine.XXX. If you think this is good enough or want to throw your own suggestion in there please do so. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

How about something a little less “As-Seen-On-TV-ish” something like “Combat Fitness”, or “Fitness Combat”. Something that suggests the military/physical nature of what you’re doing.

Maybe try finding a keyword selector online and enter some key phrases and see if anything it spits out gives you an idea or two…

15 yr old girl equipment free workout routine. and run faster help!?

im a 15 yr old girl average weight and am looking to improve my overall fitness i don’t have any equipment and my muscles are weak but im aiming to improve..i want basic exercises and ways to run faster and a routine would be awesome. thanks in advance
what if im quite a sporty person but would feels unco when running. thnks

The Expert answers:

How to run faster would to be keep running for a hour everyday, eventaully you will get faster. You can get exersize video, you can youtube exesizes. Theres lots of basic exersizes that are easy to memorize, and youtube always has lots of them.

Warm up 5+min, strech 5+min, high intensity workout (cardio and/or strength training) for 2+hour, strech 1+hour. Cardio= running, or any exersize that causes you to become out of breath. Strength training= exersize that causes muscle pain. Reps= the # of each time you go up and down from a exersize. High insentisy and less reps is best compared to medium intenstiy and more reps.

Set= an exersize done until failure. Exersize= one particular exersize. Failure= phsycially can not do another rep. Always do an exersize until failure. Muscle soreness= muscle pain that happens the day after your workout, can last a day to a week, sometimes more depending how hard you worked. If your muscles arnt sore the next day after your workout then make your workout harder. Recovery= the time during your muscle soreness that you dont do more then light exersize, so your muscles can recover and grow.

Its good to have muscle soreness, during the time you have muscle soreness, dont do more then light exersizes. Once your muscle soreness has gone away, then do your high intensity workout. Particular muscles may be sore and other may not be, you can workout the muscles that arnt sore, but wait to do more then light exersizes to the sore muscles until the soreness has gone.

Eat 2000+cals a day. Eat healthy varieites of fruits, veggies, grains(not white grains), meats, dairy, raw nuts. 6+meals a day, 3 hours apart. Eat 1+gram protein times your body weight. So if you weigh 100lbs, you eat 100+grams protein daily. Drink 2+cups water per hour. Sleep8+hours.

Mary asks…

fitness advice, please???

I don’t seem to be seeing any results and aren’t really enjoying my workouts… And just wanted to see if anyone can assist…
This is my usual fitness week:
Tuesday 7-8pm: Mixed discipline marial arts (self defence with high CardioVascular workout)
Friday 7-8:30pm: Gym 45mins CV and 45mins Weights and machines (Bike, x-trainer and rowing machine)
Sunday 9-10:30am: Gym (as above)

The rest of the week I do exercises at home (roughly about 15-30mins): pushups, abs work, free weights, etc (anything that doesn’t need exercise equipment or can be done in the home environment)…

And I just don’t seem to be getting anywhere… No real weight loss or body shape change… Been doing the gym and home stuff for about a year and the martial arts only a couple of months…

The Expert answers:

It seems you’re aiming for a leaner physique as opposed to the muscle bound frame. The best advice i can offer is mix your routine up. You should stick with the same routine for no more than 8 weeks as your body gets used to the way it is working.

On any CV workout, the worst thing you can do is plod along at the same speed for however many minutes. If you’re running, run for a minute, then try sprinting or very fast running for a minute, and drop back to more of a jog and so on, same with the rower, hard for 250m, gentle for the 250m etc….it’s a great way to train, burns calories, and really shapes your body.

At the gym, try jumping from machine to machine without a break, but not on the same muscle group. (eg, 3 sets of bar bell curls interspersed with 3 sets of maybe skull crushers or another tricep excercise). If you want to tone, but not really build, try 12+ reps on each set with a slightly lighter weight for the first 8 weeks, then change it to more building for the next 8, where by you increase the weight but lower the reps to 6-10 max on each set. By the next higher rep sets, you’ll be able to lift that bit more and the toning should really show.

Make sure you keep good form doing weights, it helps strengthen the tendons, and prevents core damage. If you want to try another way of working, do pyramids. Find the max one/two rep weight you can do for one exercise then drop it down in weight. (Ie, bar bell curl 50kg, then 40kg, then 30kg etc….by the time you’re lifting 10kg your muscles will be struggling to perform one rep). Finally, not wanting to drone, but i know i’ve said number of reps, but overall, it’s working to muscle failure which is most important, it fatigues the muscle, and with a healthy diet, the difference should show soon enough.

Don’t lose heart, it maybe just that the skeletal muscle is building first, and the rest will come with patience.

Lizzie asks…

I need help loosing weight?

I’m fat and need to loose weight?
I weigh 412 pounds. I need to loose about 250.

***********************I DO NOT NEED DIET ADVICE. I REPEAT: I DO NOT NEED DIET OR DETOX ADVICE.***************************

Physically, I can not do yoga. I can not get down on the floor to do crunches. I have back problems that prevent me from doing sit ups, push ups and crunches.

I know walking is the best thing for me. I am walking outside my apartment complex for about 10-15 minutes a day. I know walking is the best thing.

Bike riding: I do not own a bike. I am physically unable to haul it up and down to my 2nd floor apartment anyway. Swimming: I do not have access to a swimming pool. I also can not find a swim suit in my size.

Gym/work out room: Yes, my complex has a fitness room with a treadmill and weights. However, I can not use it because the weight limit on the treadmill, exercise bike and free standing weights bench has a limit of 300 pounds. At 412 pounds, that means I’m 112 pounds to fat to even think about using it.

I am physically unable to jump so jumping jacks are out. I can’t even jump high enough to use a jump rope. Besides, if I jumped roped, I would have sound issues with my downstairs neighbors.

I do not have a YMCA in my area. I would have to drive 15 miles out of my way, and I can not afford the gas to drive 30 miles out of my way 3-5 times a week. It is not because I’m lazy. I want to go. But with gas prices being so high, I can’t afford to drive. Public buses are out of the question because the bus trip just to get there would take two hours. (I already checked) and I’m not sitting on a bus/waiting for one for 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day.

I am looking for cheap or free workout equipment and easy workouts to do at home with little or no equipment needed. I’m willing to buy weights and workout videos that I can do at home. What are some good suggestions?

With the diet thing, I’m already following the diet plan my Dr. and I worked out and am eating a heart healthy/low sodium diet. I’ve cut out junk food and other crap. I’m eating healthy, but not skimping or depriving myself.

Thanks
